“The Adventures of Kevin DuBrow” were my attempt at doing a joke comic strip.  Personally, I don’t think I’m really cut out for a doing a regular joke comic strip as several of the “Adventures” dutifully attest.  But they certainly got better as they went along, and this is one of my favorites.  It’s the first appearance of Hannah Schmiege in the role of Gretchen because I thought it would be funny for Kevin DuBrow to go on a date.  She ended being a fun character, as she is perhaps the most dim-witted of all the Transparent Life crew, though she at times shows herself to understand the simple things a lot of other people miss.  This of course is very unlike Hannah in real life, who is a true mental giant.  I know it sounds like I’m being sarcastic right now, but I’m not.  Hannah’s really smart.  Gretchen also proves herself to be a true counterpart to Kevin.  They’re both out of the loop and rather stupid, but Gretchen is likably stupid.  Good for her.

Kevin DuBrow really didn’t come into his own until the “Adventures of Kevin DuBrow” series.  The name came from a Homestar Runner cartoon in which he bets Strong Bad that he is cool.  If Strong Bad loses he has to have dinner with the King of Town, but if Homestar loses he has to change is name to Kevin DuBrow (the lead singer of Quiet Riot).  Homestar wins by putting on some sunglasses and saying “Sup?”  It was a humorous cartoon.  Admittedly, the Homestar character was an early influence on Kevin’s character, though they certainly diverged as time went on.
