The idea for "Circles" first came about with two images I got in my head- a guy reading comics in a closet by flashlight and a girl sitting in the snow writing. I liked the imagery I had in mind, but had no real story ideas. So I came up with this really loose narrative that featured the two bare stories intersecting. I started with the pictures of Ben Parman as Marvin in the closet. Not coincidentally, he is reading Daniel Clowes' Ghost World graphic novel.
